WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after the Trump Administration announced its intention to abandon the Open Skies Treaty. The treaty promotes international military openness and transparency by allowing unarmed aerial surveillance flights over participating countries.
“Abandoning the Open Skies Treaty is a gift to Russia. This treaty was designed to demonstrate an international commitment to transparency on the part of participating countries. Surveillance overflights under this treaty allowed participating countries to gather intelligence while also requiring that they remain accepting of scrutiny from other countries. By pulling out, we’re enabling Russia to conceal their operations and avoid accountability. It’s a dangerous move that hurts our European allies, hurts our national security, and doesn’t get us any closer to de-escalating tensions with Russia.”
